Brachiano: Male, 35-60, Duke of Brachiano; powerful and pathological, depraved and impulsive; will stop at nothing to achieve his goals; in love with Vittoria. Francisco De Medici: Male, 40-60, Duke of Florence; powerful old-money ruler, brilliant strategist; cold and calculated; capable of deception and violence when provoked. Monticelso: Male, 50-70, a Cardinal; backroom dealer, slimy, deceitful, glib surface; misogynist, powerful public speaker. Lodovico: Male, 40-55, a deposed Italian Count; vindictive, charismatic, sadistic, crazy; doubles with: Camillo (Male 40 - 55) husband to Vittoria; cuckolded, pompous, easily duped. Marcello: Male, 30-45, an Attendant of the Duke of Florence, and brother to Vittoria and Flamineo; the “good”, rule-following sibling; appalled by the workings of his brother. Giovanni: Female, 18-35, the 10 year old son of Brachiano and Isabella; he is energetic, precocious, and witty; grows from a child to a young ruler over the course of the play; doubles with: Antonelli (Female 18-35); friend to Lodovico and Dependants of the Duke of Florence. Vittoria Corombona: Female, 35-50, wife to Camillo then Brachiano; powerful, beautiful, sharply intelligent and ruthless; intensely sexual; makes bold choices in a world where rules are set by men; along with her brother Flamineo the primary protagonist of the play. Zanche: Female, 18+, African maid-servant to Vittoria; fends for herself; deceptive and fierce. Cornelia: Female, 60-80, mother to Vittoria, Flamineo and Marcello; appalled by the family’s moral fall; grieving Cassandra; goes mad after one of her sons kills the other.

Seeking:Clarence/Tyrell: Male, late 30s-40s. Clarence: A gentle and trusting man and father. He is the middle brother, between King Edward and Richard. Symbolizes goodness, gentle strength, and empathy. He is a thinking man. Tyrell: A murderer whom Richard hires to kill his young cousins, the princes in the Tower of London. Must have great skill with language. Stanley: Male, 50s. The stepfather of Richmond, he is political and strategic. He is an honest man with a good heart, as far as he can afford to be. Greatly disturbed by the corruption of Richard’s government and acutely aware that no one is safe. Moral, measured, and strong; a politician on the right side of history. Must have great skill with language. King Edward/Ratcliffe: Male, 40s. King Edward: The older brother of Richard and Clarence, and the king of England at the start of the play. He is kind and devoted King, husband and father. Dedicated to achieving resolution among the various political factions of his reign. He is unaware that Richard attempts to thwart him at every turn. Ratcliffe: A chief supporter of Richard III, and his major executioner at the time of his coup. He is loyal, and stays faithful to Richard even when mistreated. He takes care of the deaths of Rivers, Grey, Vaughn and Lord Hastings. Must have great skill with language. May Understudy. Richmond: Males & Females, late 20s–late 30s. In this production, the character of Richmond is a Latinx. Strong, determined, a force to be reckoned with. S/he represents goodness, justice, and equality—all the things Richard does not. S/he gathers an army of rebels to challenge Richard for the throne. Must have great skill with language. May Understudy. First Murderer/Scrivener: Male, 30s-40s. First Murderer: A man of physical size. By the order of Richard, he carries out the homicide of Richard’s older brother Clarence. Not the brightest bulb, and full of brute strength. Scrivener: Kind, and a man of conscience, he is sickened by the wrongs done by Richard’s corrupt government. Hired to write up the official explanation for Hasting’s execution, for public posting, and realizes clearly that the explanation is a complete lie. Must have great skill with language. Submit actors of all ethnicities/abilities. May Understudy.
