Gleb: Male, 35-39, a member of the Chekist secret police; a zealot with tremendous intensity and a dangerous sexuality; as the play progresses, we see him rise in power and position within the political party; he’s in love with Anya but would not be above killing her if necessary; we’re not looking for a typical villain; he must be likable; strong, dramatic baritenor with thrilling middle and top of range; principal. Countess Lily: Female, 50-55, the voluptuous confidante/lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Empress; she’s delightful when she’s not with the Dowager but also compassionate, respectful, and good at her job; she doesn’t take her romantic relationship with Vlad too seriously; must be a juicy character comedienne with strong dancing ability; comic belt; principal. Sarah Brown: early 20s to early 30s, female, any ethnicity. A pretty, bright-eyed woman who serves as Sergeant of the local Mission. She fully believes in her worthy cause and wishes to convert the gambling sinners to saints. Falls unexpectedly in love with Sky along the way. Though she may seem prudish and uptight, she eventually lets go. Facility with comedy/with a slight quirk is a big plus. Soprano timbre, to G. Nathan Detroit: Male, 30s to 40s, any ethnicity. Strong comedic ability. A good-hearted gambler and craps game organizer who could never hit the bigtime. He loves Adelaide, but cannot quit his gambling ways. A broke schemer with unwitting ways. Baritenor/character singer. Miss Adelaide: Female, late 20s to early 40s, any ethnicity. Nathan's fiancé and a lead performer at the Hot Box nightclub. She loves Nathan more than anything in the world and desperately wants to get married. Pretty, outspoken, stubborn. Character belter. Nicely-Nicely Johnson: Male, late 20s to 40s, any ethnicity. Just like his name suggests, he is the nicest and cheeriest of the gambling crooks. High-spirited and a bit naïve, but sincere and genuine. Nathan's loyal friend and lackey. Arvide Abernathy: 50s to 60s, male, any ethnicity. Sarah's loving grandfather. Plays the bass drum and cymbals in the Mission band, . Wise and sweet, he wants nothing but the best for her. Warm baritone. Benny Southstreet: Male, late 20s to early 40s, any ethnicity. Nathan's right-hand man and a gambler himself. Smart, slick, always moving and shaking, but with what he thinks are Nathan's best interest at heart. Baritenor to G. Big Jule: 30+, male, any ethnicity. A big time craps player from Chicago who uses a gun and his own pair of rigged dice to bully his way into never losing. Tough looking. A bit of an oaf. Baritone/ensemble singer. General Matilda B. Cartwright: Female, 30s+, any ethnicity. The regional director of the Save-a-Soul mission, Matilda is authoritative through necessity but motivated by charity. And funny.
