Jeremy Heere: Male, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; sweet, introspective, awkward and very much uncool, he just hopes to keep his head down enough to survive high school and maybe get the girl of his dreams to notice him; when he’s given the opportunity to have a supercomputer implanted in his brain that tells him how to become popular, he has to balance following its rules with following his own heart; role has been offered. The Squip: Male, 20-49, any ethnicity; the physical manifestation of a Japanese supercomputer which implants in Jeremy’s brain and teaches him how to be cool; The Squip appears as the coolest guy around: confident, self-assured and literally all-knowing, with a hint of Keanu Reeves (the coolest guy Jeremy can think of) and an occasional tendency to be snide; however, since he is a supercomputer with his own agenda, he occasionally reveals a more mechanical, much darker side. Must have a great rock/pop voice; role has been offered. Michael Mell: Male, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; funny, laid-back, and very warm; although he’s uncool too, he’s comfortable in his own skin and happy to kick back, play video games with his best (and only) friend Jeremy, listen to Bob Marley, and wait for high school to be over; Jeremy’s transformation and subsequent betrayal are devastating, and for the first time ever, the longtime outsider finds himself in a position to save the day; role has been offered. Christine: Female, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; sweet, sensitive, smart and a little nerdy, she’s a theater kid and cares deeply about it; the kind of girl who knows she’ll thrive in college, she doesn’t engage with the social hierarchy of high school but can’t resist being tempted when the coolest guy in school starts pursuing her; role has been offered. Chloe: Female, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; the most popular girl in school; confident, crass, sexy, manipulative, and downright mean at times, she’s the undisputed queen of the social scene, and rules over her minions with unquestioned power; role has been offered. Rich: Male,18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; the terror of the uncool kids, and will go out of his way to make their lives difficult; despite his meanness and almost certain criminal future, he has a secret that reveals a surprisingly sensitive side and a chance at possible redemption; must have the ability to be truly threatening; role has been offered. Jake Dillinger: Male, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; the ultimate high school cool guy; handsome, popular, a star athlete from a rich family, he has everything going for him and he knows it; alpha status is effortless to him and he might contain hidden depths, but it’s hard to see them when he gets whatever he wants all the time; strong rock/pop voice; role has been offered. Jenna Rolan: Female, 18+ to play a teenager; any ethnicity; clearly not one of the cool kids (although she desperately wants to be), she’s the school gossip who always has the dirt and is more than happy to tell anyone and everyone about it; must be great with comedy; strong voice with a pop/indie-rock sensibility; role has been offered. Mr. Heere & Others: Male, 30-49, any ethnicity; Jeremy’s Dad; sweet, cheerful, and a little pathetic, his wife’s departure the year before has left him in denial and struggling to cope; terrified of everything including stepping up as a father and wearing pants, he pretends everything is just fine; role has been offered. Seeking:Chad/Officer Tabor: Male, 20-29, Chad: early 20s, white, fairly muscular; emotionally vulnerable, has been traumatized and is dominated by his mother, although he tries to fight back; typical bully type and blames everyone else for his problems; inmate in a county jail, assault on a disabled/elderly person, two years; also plays Officer Tabor: late 20s, high school graduate, lords it over his homeboy, Zeke, yet underneath is fully aware that it’s mostly luck that their roles are not reversed; loves his position of power but is not actually a bad guy, just a little bit of a pompous ass. McGee/Zeke: Male, 20-29, McGee: late 20s, white, well-educated, inflated ego, smart, average physique; he uses language adeptly, sarcasm and rudeness are his weapons, yet he is quick to acknowledge his own demons/shortcomings with self-criticism; inmate in county jail, sale of drugs to a minor, two years; also plays Zeke: 20s, white or Latino, poorly educated, not very smart, repeat offender, represents the most stereotypical inmate type; he has an extremely short fuse, and tries very hard to appear tough while convincing Eve he’s a good guy and really cares about her; he’s at a loss at how to cope with his current predicament; inmate in county jail, use and possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia near school by non-student, one year. Attis: Male, 20-29, black Latino, average build, high school education, younger brother mentality, truly a nice guy, at a loss for how to read into any situation; sincere and loyal. Inmate in county jail, Class A misdemeanor assault, first offense, one year. Massud: Male, 25-29, well-educated, smart, muscular; he never thought he would ever be incarcerated; he is the most determined to get this behind him, considers himself different from the other inmates; also places the code of honor regarding respect very high, no room for compromise; inmate in county jail, DUI after 2nd or 3rd offense, 18 months. Arlene: Female, 40-49, Chad’s mother; some may consider her to be “white trash,” dresses way too young, flirts, strong personality who uses bravado to intimidate and seem confident; she is a complicated character who truly loves Chad but believes if she goes easy on him, he’ll be weak and unmanly; she wants to toughen him up so he overcomes all the things that got him in jail in the first place; she’s embarrassed by or disappointed in him occasionally; she runs hot and cold; she is very jealous of the attention Chad gives Sorrell; she wants to be the woman in his life and is pissed that her good deed (and power play) of bringing Sorrell to visit McGee seems to be backfiring. Sorrell/Eve: Female, 20-25, Sorrell: early 20s, white; McGee’s visitor; hairdresser, not too classy or overly well-educated but contemplative and smart; she’s trying very hard to be supportive and friendly until she gets frustrated; this experience is a little weird to her, visiting inmates, and yet she is sensitive to everything going on there and buys in to the complications of these men; she desperately wants a boyfriend; also plays Eve: early 20s, Zeke’s visitor; white or Latino, cute, not well-educated, non-threatening; she is happy to have a boyfriend and is very loyal until pushed far beyond the limits of tolerance; she scares herself with her decisive actions; she does love Zeke, she’s never known anything different from the men in her life and doesn’t expect much. Tisah: Female, 20-25, black or black Latino; Attis’s visitor; smart and well-spoken, educated, a social worker; she loves Attis because he is a good man; she is trying to remain loyal despite what she learns about how Attis ended up in jail; she decides to take decisive action to confront Attis and his brother’s issues; she’s kind but strong. Kaley: Female, 20-29, Massud’s visitor; well-educated, introspective, attractive; she is not self-confident although she has lots of reasons to be; she has been hurt too many times and, as such, is self-protective and suspicious; she wants to believe Massud is a good man (which he is) but almost sets herself up to be let down, as that feels inevitable to her; she is clearly watchful of everything that goes on and seems to be watching out for Plan B options if things don’t go well, which is her self-protection mechanism. Prisoner Poet/RJ: Male, 20-39, black Latino; as Prisoner Poet: ancient, timeless, representing every prisoner; he has spent decades in prison and has seen it all, as well as earned the wisdom of true suffering; he is something of a Greek Chorus, and his poems either project, reflect or analyze life in prison, while very carefully drawing comparisons with all of us on the outside thinking we’re different from them; excellent at speaking poetry and heightened language; also plays BJ, Attis’ brother; a few years older than Attis, black Latino, not as smart as Attis, may not have finished high school; he’s loyal to his brother but he’s a punk and in the end willing to sacrifice even the person he’s closest to, to save his own skin; he justifies it as family loyalty where everyone does whatever it takes for each other, thinking he would have done the same thing if the roles had been reversed; probably not true, though; slow to grasp the situation as Tisah has set it up, partly because his ego bought all of her sudden attention towards him.
