BREAKDOWN SYNOPSIS: When Steve Durbin sets out to chart his (Black) family's ancestry online, his discoveries throw his whole family into turmoil. Namely: his niece, Meg, is forced to consider her relationship with Drew (her white partner) in a disturbing new light. Guided by a hip-hop dance class chorus, this singular American family must find a way to live in a present that's overpopulated with ghosts. PEOPLE Instructor — Black man, queer, forties. Weary task-master. Also appears as an ancestor. TATUM — White man, 30-50. Ensemble role. Appears as a gym denizen, Drew’s father, and an ancestor. ALLIE — Black woman, 25-35. Appears as a gym denizen, Drew’s best friend, and an ancestor. The following roles have been CAST: Meg Wilson — Black woman, twenty-seven. A middle-school English teacher with a flair for the dramatic. Partner to Drew. (Cast) Drew Tatum — White male, thirty-three. A Ph.D. candidate in Quantum Mechanics, a bleeding heart. Partner to Meg. (Cast) Stevie (Steve) Wilson — Black man, queer, fifty-one. Meg’s uncle, Beverly's twin. Exuberant and always right. (Cast) Mom (Beverly Durbin) — Black woman, fifty-one. Meg's Mom, Steve's twin. Consciously goofy, but wise. (Cast) HARRIET — Asian-American woman, 30-50. Ensemble role. Appears as a gym denizen, Drew’s step- mother, and an ancestor. Once a head-banging, partying musician, he is now wealthy and buttoned- up. He is something of a romantic nostalgist. A nice guy, determined to make up for some past regrets. Actor who sings, baritone to F#. [BILL] Male, mid 30s to late 40s, any ethnicity. May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Funny, perhaps a big or imposing man. Should be a very good actor who sings. High baritone. [SOPHIE SHERIDAN] Female, early 20s, any ethnicity. Donna’s headstrong daughter, Sophie is determined to have what her mother never had: a traditional family and a father to walk her down the aisle. Young, bright and energetic, she has lived all her life on the island and is ready to leave. Great singer, pop soprano to E5. [SKY] Male, mid-to-late 20s, any ethnicity. Strong, smart and maybe a bit angsty, she is always finding ways to rebel against her father, who tries to keep her under lock and key. Very Strong dancer and strong mezzo with strong rock vocals. [WILLARD HEWITT] 18+ to play high school student, male, any ethnicity. The village puppy-dog. Loyal and a little dim, but ready to defend anyone's honor. Shy around girls. Full of quirks, and nervous around Willard, upon whom she’s been crushing for years. Strong singer/dancer. [REVEREND SHAW MOORE] 40s to 50s, male, any ethnicity. Spiritual leader and a powerful influence in the town. Deals with the loss of his son through overzealous piety. This causes a rift with his daughter Ariel, who is openly rebelling against him. Has unknowingly fallen into a pious trap, but is ultimately trying to do the right thing. Baritone with warm strength. [VI MOORE] 40s to 50s, female, any ethnicity. Reverend Moore's wife. Living in her husband's shadow, though silently powerful. Ultimately, she finds her voice and becomes the agent of change for her husband. Mezzo. [ETHEL MCCORMICK] early 40s, female, any ethnicity. Ren's Mother. Dealing with the fallout from her divorce, and finding herself in a very different place than Chicago. Strong-willed, but now in a place where she's constantly being told to be quiet. Protective of her son and her values, but unable to break free of her circumstances. Workaholic with little time left for enjoying life or appreciating simple things. [EMILY HOBBS] female, any ethnicity, 40s to 50s. Mezzo with a strong belt up to a C. Walter’s wife and Michael’s mother. At first overwhelmed by Buddy, but soon embraces him as part of the family. [DEB] Female, any ethnicity, 30s to 40s. A very strong character singer with an excellent belt. Funny secretary at Walter’s office, full of character and sharp wit. Must be a strong mover. [SANTA/MR GREENWAY] male, any ethnicity, 50s+. Strong singer with great comic timing. Greenway is a shrewd businessman. Santa is Jolly, warm, funny; a down to earth blue-collar type. Lovable. [STORE MANAGER] male, any ethnicity, 30s to 40s.
