Seeking:Archibald Craven: Male, late 30s to early 50s. Sensitive and tortured by the loss of his young wife, Archie has walled himself off from the world and lives with his memories, grief, and guilt. He is convinced he brings harm to those he loves, but is still possessed of wit and warmth. Ultimately an appealing, charismatic, charming man crippled more by grief than physical impediment. Astonishing Broadway baritone. Vocal range C3-Ab4. Mary Lennox: Female, 10 to 12 years old. A survivor. The child of a privileged, narcissistic woman and an affectionate but ineffectual father, she is abandoned in the ultimate way--through the death of her family. Thrust into a new and equally lonely world, she finds an inner strength, an innate intrepidness, wit, joy and compassion. Finally healed (with the help of those she encounters at Misselthwaite), she in turn becomes a healer. A stubborn, intelligent, sensitive, funny, charming child. A pure, unchanged girl soprano. Vocal range Ab3-D5. Lily Craven: Female, late 20s through 30s. Colin’s mother, Archibald‘s wife. A spirit, frozen in time. Her energy winds through and pervades the play. She struggles to reach those she loves to heal and nurture. She is the essence of forgiveness and compassion. An ethereal soprano, her voice reflects the spirit within. Vocal range B3-D6. Dr. Neville Craven: Male, early 30s to early 40s. The second son. Overlooked and resentful. Historically second to Archie, both in love and position. Saddled with the the survival of his family, the normal resentments of childhood have hardened into bitterness and aggression. His natural attractiveness and charm hide the malice underneath. Like everyone in the story, maintains a deep core of humanity which makes him redeemable. A remarkable Broadway baritone. Vocal range C3-F4. Dickon: Male, in his teens. Magical. Raised on the moors, respecting and caring for the natural world around him, he has a unique ability to communicate with the earth and its inhabitants. Odd, elfin--a sprite. He can be rough and wild but is always simple, kind, and direct. A very old soul. He can conjure. Must have an excellent ear for accents and be a great pop rock tenor. Vocal range C3-G4. Martha: Female, late teens. Young, simple, direct. Wry, frank and honest. A housemaid in a great house, she has the wisdom of a young woman raised in a simple cottage. Deeply invested in the care of the young people with whom she has been charged. She is nurture and sunlight. All in the form of an honest, plainspoken 18-year-old girl. Must have a spectacular, earth-shattering belt. Vocal range G3-D5. Colin Craven: Male, 10 to 12 years old. Bedridden and convinced of his own imminent mortality (because everyone tells him he is fragile, frail, and dying). He is as isolated as Mary and even more poorly parented. Colin has discovered the only path to attention is through tantrums and imperiousness--but he is a child still. Curious, sensitive, resilient and, though desperate for affection, capable of great joy and wonder. A charming, funny child. Vocal range, A3-E5. Ben Weatherstaff: Male, late 40s-late 60s. A gardener. Decidedly happier with animals and plants than humans, Ben is bristly, crotchety, has an extremely dry sense of humor. He doesn’t suffer fools. Loyal to a fault, his rough exterior hides a heart as deep as the ocean. Vocal range E3-D#4. Mrs. Medlock: Female, 50s through 60s. Saddled with the running of a great house without direction, she sees the young people in her charge as burdens. Stern and flinty, she isn’t heartless, but is definitely of the “children should be seen and not heard” mindset. Practical and wry. Rose Lennox: Female, 30–35. Mary’s mother and Lily’s sister. A pampered, beautiful, glittering, utterly narcissistic socialite. In love only with the love showered upon her. In life, unable to see past herself to the welfare and safety of those around her. Vocal range A3-D6. Captain Albert Lennox: Male, mid-30s to 40. A dashing army officer--tall and handsome. In life, besotted by his very beautiful but narcissistic wife. Struggling to make her see and care for their young daughter. Vocal range Bb2-A4. Ayah: Female, 20s-40s. Mary’s Indian nanny, Alto. Loving, caring, comforting, and strong--mystical and loyal. Actresses of South Asian descent strongly encouraged to audition. Fakir: Male, 18+, strong high tenor with skill and experience of traditional Indian singing. A spirit of the past from India. Should have mystery, magic and gravitas. Actors of South Asian descent strongly encouraged to audition. Vocal range C3-B4.
